Diane Arbus (Matthaei family portraits)

This blog is a continue to my other blog on another account that will be linked. Now to educate.

Diana Arbas is a photojournalist famous for taking pictures of the most strange things. For example she would take pictures of dwarves, couples at a nudist colony and the mentally ill. She also had the ability to make that looks ordinary look strange. When she took pictures rather than take a picture of what someone else wanted, she would take pictures of what she want to take of or what she may have seen in her mind.
In 1969 she took pictures of the Matthaei family. But she was pretty interested in taking pictures of a daughter, Marcella. A girl who looks pretty ordinary. I think that  Diana may have had saw a hidden side to Marcella. She might have been determined to try to find this side. Here is a picture of Marcella.

She looks passive and obedient. But in another photo she was relaxing on a lounge chair. This lowered her guard, showing that she is a teenager close to rebelling. Diana may have saw Marcella as herself when she was young and she may have wanted to capture what she saw.
